Build in Public: GoKiddo [Part 10]

Once again, I have tricked myself into thinking I can just build a website/app and put it out there and users will stream in from all over the world and pay me to use my website/app.

Welcome back to my GoKiddo build in public journey. If you missed Part 9, you can check it out here.

Here’s a quick update about where I am at with GoKiddo.

Build it, and they will come. Right?

Once again, I have tricked myself into thinking I can just build a website/app and put it out there and users will stream in from all over the world and pay me to use my website/app.

Not so easy tiger. It’s a bit more difficult than that.

Let’s zoom out a bit. What is the current situation?

  • GoKiddo has ±10 users.
  • There are 24 business listed, which I listed manually.
  • None of them are currently paying a subscription fee.

So the next question then becomes - why would a business pay R250 per month to be part of an app that does not actually offer them any value at the moment? The answer is. They won’t.

And the issue with me listing them manually is, they don’t even know they are listed, so they don’t see the benefit of it and it becomes a nightmare to maintain all the listings.

I still believe that GoKiddo can offer incredible value to parents looking for fun things to do with their kids, if there are enough listings on it, therefore to make it viable, I needs LOTS of businesses to list themselves.

So how do I get business to list themselves? Make it FREE

The only way I can get business to list themselves, is to make it free to list. Most business owners I know, will gladly list themselves on a directory website, if it is for free. It’s a no-brainer. You have literally nothing to lose.

But how will I monetise?

This is the first question most people will ask, and the answer is a freemium business model.

A freemium model is when you offer the basic service and functions for free, but then charge for the premium features.

What could those premium features be?

  • The ability to boost listings to the top of searches
  • Add space at the top of pages
  • Push notifications to everyone who likes your listing
  • Be included in a weekly newsletter
  • Be included in Top 10 lists.

So what are the next steps?

At the moment, I don’t have capacity to make all of the above changes, I have a few other projects , getting my full attention at the moment.

At the moment it does not cost me much to run GoKiddo, except for my Flutterflow subscription, which I will cancel for the time being until I get back to it.

Thank you for reading and hopefully I will have some more time soon to get back into GoKiddo.
